This was an exciting and very stylish project in West Chester, PA, where we installed a 505 sqft microcement floor in Concrete gray. The original floor was old, with tile covering, which was removed down to the plywood base.
First, we applied a self-leveling layer with mesh reinforcement to smooth and strengthen the surface. Once the self-leveling compound dried, we added an anticrack membrane to provide waterproofing and prevent small cracks from forming. Afterward, we installed the first layer of microcement, followed by a second layer. The entire surface was then sealed with a matte polyurethane finish, providing both protection and a sleek look.
It’s important to note that microcement varies among manufacturers, and the photos may not fully capture the final result. Lighting can create different reflections, so the finish can look slightly different in various settings. The system is hand-applied, and the beauty of this type of flooring lies in its natural imperfections. It doesn’t appear perfectly even or uniform, which adds to its charm. Instead, the floor features organic lines and textures that reflect the craftsmanship and the unique nature of the material.
The timeline for a similar project can vary depending on the condition of the existing floor. Since microcement is a decorative coating, it may be necessary to apply a self-leveling layer, which would add an extra day to the project. Additionally, each layer must dry properly, which is important for achieving the best result.
